Japanese pachinko and entertainment company Sega Sammy Holdings has seen its revenue for the three months to 30 September 2017 increase 14.9% to JPY194.7 billion (US$1.7 billion), driven by a 36% increase in pachinko and pachislot machine sales.
The pachinko and pachislot segment jumped from JPY64.9 billion to JPY88.3 billion following the launch of major new titles, although Sega Sammy stated that it continues to review its sales schedule and “expects the number of titles and unit sales will likely be less than originally planned for the full year.”
The company’s entertainment contents segment, which includes digital games, packaged games, amusement machines and operation of amusement centers, grew 4% year-on-year to JPY101.5 billion.
Operating income for the quarter grew 75% to JPY26.8 billion (US$235 million) with pachinko and pachislots contributing JPY21.4 billion of that.
Pachinko machines were at the heart of the revenue rise, with 119,000 units sold for the quarter compared with 75,000 in the same period in 2016. Pachislot sales fell slightly from 81,000 to 75,000.
Revenue from the operation of resorts in Japan and Korea fell 30% to JPY4.7 billion, however Sega Sammy’s Korean partnership with Paradise Co saw improvement with sales of KRW62 billion in 3Q17 and the number of visitors reaching 59,000 after Incheon integrated resort Paradise City launched in April.
The IR currently boasts a casino with 158 gaming tables and 291 slot machines as well as a hotel and convention center, with Sega Sammy adding that a spa, club, family entertainment facility, retail plaza and boutique hotel were expected to open in early 2018.
