The number of package tour visitors to Macau grew 22.8% year-on-year in July, while the number of guests staying in hotels and guesthouses rose 15.6% according to information from the Statistics and Census Service.
The number of visitors arriving on package tours reached 819,000 for the month – up 21.9% sequentially due to the summer holidays – with mainland China contributing 669,000 of those, representing a 25.6% increase. Korea (38,000) and Taiwan (42,000) also notched increases.
The first seven months of the year have totalled almost 4.6 million package tour visitors, up 12.4% year-on-year, however August numbers are expected to be heavily impacted after package tours were cancelled in the wake of Typhoon Hato.
Outbound residents using travel agencies rose by 21.0% year-on-year to 130,000, while residents travelling on package tours surged by 35.8% to 55,000. Those leaving for mainland China increased 46.6% to 39,000.
The number of hotel and guesthouse rooms available in Macau in July increased by 15.3% year-on-year to 37,000, which contributed to a 15.6% increase in guests for the month to 1.21 million. Guests from mainland China (792,000), Korea (49,000) and Taiwan (49,000) grew by 21.6%, 96.0% and 13.2% respectively year-on-year.
The average length of stay of guests held stable at 1.4 nights, while the average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses reached 90.4%, up 2.9 percentage points year-on-year.
In the first seven months of 2017, guests of hotels and guesthouses totaled 7.56 million, up 15.8% year-on-year. The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses stood at 85.1%, up 4.6 percentage points. The average length of stay of guests again held stable at 1.4 nights.
