Construction on Melco Resorts’ Morpheus Hotel is set to be temporarily suspended after one worker was killed and another seriously injured in an on-site accident late Friday.
According to a source with knowledge of the incident, Melco officials are currently conducting an internal investigation and will meet today to determine what action to take, with the possibility of suspending construction work for up to a month. An official statement will be released by Melco this week.
Inside Asian Gaming has learned that the two workers were lifting materials to the 30th floor when a hoisting beam collapsed under the weight, striking the workers as it fell.
This latest incident comes just a month after a 47-year-old worker fell to his death on the site of SJM’s Grand Lisboa Palace, with the government ordering construction on the site to be subsequently halted.
Morpheus, the new luxury hotel at City of Dreams due to open in 2018, is reportedly nearing completion with workers now doing internal fit-outs as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing work.
It remains to be seen whether Friday’s incident will delay the opening of Morpheus, currently planned for July next year.
