The Macao (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co Ltd will replace local greyhound races with live broadcasts of overseas races and virtual races when the Canidrome ceases operations in 2018.
The company has detailed its plans as part of its 2016 management report, published by Ponto Final this week, in which it says it aims to preserve the Canidrome legacy, a venue created more than 80 years ago but which has come under increasing scrutiny in recent times for a lack of animal welfare practices.
“After a long and careful consideration, the company proposes to create a system of racing visualization abroad, allowing Macau and its visitors to follow up on international greyhound racing,” the report reads. It would also “implement a system of ‘virtual races’, a combination of science, technology and gaming, thus allowing to maintain the culture of Macau Canidrome and extending Macau Canidrome to a more international scale.”
There is no mention as to which countries would be used or exact dates for implementation of the new betting system.
The new plan follows a directive from the DICJ issued last year for the Canidrome to either relocate or shut down by 21 July 2018, with the land to be reallocated for social infrastructure.
