The famous Michael Jackson white glove worn when he premièred his trademark Moonwalk Dance, was displayed at Oceanus for the opening of Macau’s latest casino.
The garment was purchased recently by hotel executive Hoffman Ma in New York for a tidy USD350,000, suggesting it had been subject to a bidding war. Mr Ma is Deputy Chief Executive of Ponte 16, a gaming resort and hotel complex at Macau’s other harbour—the Inner Harbour.
SJM has a major stake in Ponte 16, so the loan of the artefact was all about keeping it in the family, so-to-speak. The chances of the glove going Macau-walking again in future seem slim, given that Ponte 16 is building a special display area for it and other Michael Jackson memorabilia in a bid to draw in visitors from other parts of the city.
