England’s Football Association will prohibit its members from betting on the sport everywhere in the world beginning with the 2014-15 season.
The measures approved by FA shareholders at the association’s annual general meeting cover all individuals involved in the game at the Premier League, Football League and Football Conference levels and the top two divisions in each of the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues and include direct or indirect wagering on any match or competition and any other football-related matter, including the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection.
Currently, FA rules state that no participant can bet on a match or competition in which they are involved that season, or which they can influence, or any other football-related matter concerning the league that they play in.
The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting also remains prohibited.
The FA has recently charged a number of players with breaches of its betting rules, including Nottingham Forests’ Dexter Blackstock and Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend.
Premiership footballers Cameron Jerome, who plays for Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United’s Dan Gosling have also admitted offences, and Tranmere Rovers’ manager Ronnie Moore was suspended and later fired after admitting to an FA betting charge.
