The number of guests staying in Macau’s hotels grew by 5% year-on-year to 1,088,000 in February, led by growth from the mainland China, Korea and Hong Kong markets.
Guests from Mainland China comprised around three-quarters of the total at 767,000, an increase of 4.6% compared with February 2018, while visitation from Korea was up 23.4% to 47,000 and from Hong Kong by 1.1% to 111,000. Taiwan saw a drop in numbers of 10.6% to 32,000.
Although the total number of hotels and guesthouses city-wide went up by two to 117, average occupancy rates also increased by 2.3 percentage points to 91.9%. The rates of 5-star hotels (94.0%) and 3-star hotels (93.2%) rose by 1.2 percentage points and 7.5 percentage points respectively. The average length of stay of guests held steady year-on-year at 1.5 nights.
February’s numbers mean that guests checking in to Macau hotels and guesthouses have risen by 5.3% for the first two months of 2019 to 2,333,000 with the average occupancy rate up by 1.8 percentage points to 92.4%.
