Macau’s average hotel occupancy rate climbs to 86.4% in 2024

Macau’s average hotel occupancy rate reached 86.4% in 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.9 percentage points, with the occupancy rate of 5-star hotel rooms soaring to 88.6%.

The hotel occupancy rate applies to 146 establishments surveyed by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), four more than in 2023, although the number of available rooms decreased by 7.8% to around 43,000 rooms. Among them, the occupancy rate of 5-star hotels was 88.6%, 4-star hotels 82.3% and 3-star hotels 83.8%, representing year-on-year increases of 6.1 percentage points, 3.1 percentage points and 3.0 percentage points respectively.

Total hotel guests in 2024 increased by 6.4% year-on-year to 14.43 million. Of these, 10.59 million were from mainland China, up 7.7% year-on-year, followed by 1.85 million from Hong Kong, down 16.6% year-on-year.

The number of international guests was 1.11 million, a year-on-year increase of 57.4%. Of those, 321,000 guests were from Korea, 87,000 from Malaysia, 81,000 from Japan, 73,000 from India, and 68,000 from Singapore.

For the month of December, the average occupancy rate of hotel rooms increased by 4.2 percentage points year-on-year to 89.9%, however the number of guests decreased by 9.6% year-on-year to 1.19 million. The average length of stay remained unchanged at 1.6 nights.

According to the DSEC, the number of tour group arrivals in 2024 was 2.1 million, a year-on-year increase of 63.8%, with mainland Chinese tour group arrivals up by 57.1% to 1.87 million. International group tour arrivals also increased by 160% to 204,000, including 91,000 from Korea and 24,000 from India.

The average occupancy rate of hotel rooms in December 2024 increased by 4.2 percentage points year-on-year to 89.9%. The number of guests decreased by 9.6% y-o-y to 1.194 million, while the average length of stay remained unchanged at 1.6 nights.
