The operator of Macau International Airport (MIA) said Thursday that it is actively looking to expand international routes to and from the Macao SAR, including routes connecting it with the United States and Europe.
Providing an update following the recent Golden Week holiday period, which saw around 144,000 passengers travel through MIA and 1,202 aircraft movements, the operator said it is “constantly expanding” its international routes and will soon start a service to Laos.
“Meanwhile, MIA is actively working with airlines to expand routes from Macau and transit to Europe, the United States and other regions, providing one-ticket-through-baggage-check service,” it said.
“In order to cooperate with the tourism development direction of the Macao SAR Government, MIA continues to expand the aviation market of Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia, aiming at providing passengers with more travel options and attract more international tourists to travel in Macau.”
MIA, meanwhile, handled around 20,000 passengers and 171 flight movements per day during Golden Week from 1 to 7 October, an increase of 27% and 24% respectively compared with the same period in 2023.
Overall passenger volume and aircraft movements have recovered to approximately 82% and 77% of 2019 levels respectively.
