The Deputy Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Cheng Wai Tong, says the agency is now expecting average daily visitor arrivals during the Golden Week holiday to reach more than 130,000, which would be a new record high for the National Day holiday.
Cheng’s comments come after the MGTO released the official figures for Day 2 of the seven-day holiday period, which saw 166,061 visitors enter – the second highest figure of the year behind only the 166,500 people who arrived on 24 August.
It also beat the previous highest single-day record for this holiday of 162,100 in 2019. The number of visitors to Macau this year has already surpassed the 2019 level at the corresponding time of year.
Cheng said in an interview that visitor arrivals to Macau on the first two days of the National Day holiday were better than expected, and it is believed that the number of visitors across the seven days will reach a new high.
“The hotel occupancy rate for the first two days of the holiday reached 94.6%, and it is expected that the average daily visitor arrivals will remain above 130,000,” he said.
“The recovery of Macau’s tourism industry has been very good, and I believe the momentum will continue during the National Day holiday.”
Cheng also pointed out that, according to provisional figures, nearly 25 million tourists visited Macau during the first three quarters of the year, with more than 8 million more expected to visit Macau in Q4.
This year’s National Day Golden Week runs for seven days from 1 to 7 October. More than 304,000 tourists visited Macau during the first two days.
