Employment in Macau’s gaming industry fell slightly to 70,300 in the second quarter of the year, 1,100 people fewer than in the first quarter.
The overall unemployment rate for 2Q24 was 1.7%, while the unemployment rate for local residents was 2.3%, both down by 0.4 percentage points quarter-on-quarter. The underemployment rate remained at 1.5%.
Median income for the employed population was MOP$17,900 per month and for the local employed population MOP$20,000 per month, representing quarter-to-quarter decreases of MOP$100 and MOP$500 respectively.
The total workforce was 383,000, of which 70,300 were employed in the gaming sector.
However, compared to 2Q19, when gaming employment reached 87,100, the difference was 16,800.
Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) pointed out that the employed population in the second quarter of this year amounted to about 376,400, largely benefiting from the non-gaming sector, while the number of locally employed residents amounted to about 287,700, representing quarter-on-quarter increases of 5,300 and 3,000 respectively.
However, among the unemployed looking for new jobs, those who were engaged in the gaming and retail industries before losing their jobs accounted for the majority.
