A total of 2,692,191 visitors entered Macau in May, up 21.6% year-on-year and recovering to 79.3% of the same month in 2019, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service.
The May figure also represented a 3.5% increase over April, driven by the “May Day” Golden Week holiday.
Of those who entered Macau in May, visitors from mainland China increased by 25.9% year-on-year to 1,856,283; however, Hong Kong visitor arrivals decreased by 3.3% year-on-year to 582,083 while visitor arrivals from Taiwan increased by 120% to 68,971. The Hong Kong figure achieved parity with visitor numbers in May 2019, while those from mainland China and Taiwan recovered to 76.5% and 78.5% of 2019 levels respectively.
International arrivals totaled 184,854 in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 74.4% and recovering to 61.3% of the same month in 2019. South Korea led the way with 33,999 arrivals, recovering to 51.7% of the same period in 2019, followed by the Philippines with 35,852 travelers or 73.8% over the same period in 2019.
In terms of source of arrival, a total of 2,100,821 visitor arrivals were via land in May, a 20.5% year-on-year increase. There were another 332,341 arrivals by sea, a 6.6% year-on-year increase, and 259,029 by air, a 63.7% year-on-year increase.
Same-day visitors (1,430,741) and overnight visitors (1,261,450) showed respective growth of 27.2% and 15.9% year-on-year, while the average length of stay of visitors held stable year-on-year at 1.2 days.
For the first five months of 2024 combined, visitor arrivals totaled 14,168,665, up 50.2% year-on-year and recovering to 82.4% of the same period in 2019.
