Galaxy Entertainment Group Chaiman Francis Lui has personally donated HK$3 million (US$385,550) to assist victims of the tragic fire that engulfed a housing state in Hong Kong – part of the total HK$10 million (US$1.29 million) donation from the Lui family’s construction firm K. Wah Group.
The fire at the Tai Po housing estate, Wang Fuk Court, had claimed at least 83 lives as of Friday morning with the death toll still rising as firefighters continue to fight the devastating blaze.
Expressing its profound condolences to the residents and firefighter who lost their lives in the incident, K. Wah Group on Thursday announced a donation of HK$10 million to support the victims, of which HK$7 million (US$899,625) will be donated by the company and HK$3 million personally by Lui. The funds aim to provide immediate financial assistance to families affected by the fire, alleviating urgent hardship and supporting them in rebuilding their lives.
“While fire is merciless, there is love and compassion among people,” Lui said. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, which has caused many residents to lose their homes. Through this donation, we hope to provide some timely support to the affected neighbors, doing our part to help them cope with the immediate challenges.
“We stand together with the community and sincerely wish all those affected an early recovery from this tragedy and a return to normal life.”
The tragedy stands as Hong Kong’s most severe fire in 63 years and has drawn global attention. On Wednesday evening, China’s President Xi Jinping expressed condolences for the victims of the Tai Po fire, instructing the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and the Liaison Office to support the SAR government in making every effort to extinguish the blaze.
