According to provisional figures released by the Macao SAR Government, approximately 1,144,401 visitors entered Macau during this year’s eight-day National Day Golden Week holiday, averaging around 143,000 daily arrivals.
The figures, released by the Public Security Police, indicate that 88,993 mainland Chinese visitors entered Macau on the final day of Golden Week. This follows the 1,055,408 visitor arrivals during the first seven days, averaging 150,772 daily and representing a 7.4% year-on-year increase compared to last year’s seven-day Golden Week total.
The highest single day entry figure occurred on the fourth day of the holiday period on Saturday 4 October with 191,132 entries recorded, representing an 18.1% year-on-year increase and setting a new record for National Day holiday entries. Friday 3 October also saw 181,942 entries, a 5.6% year-on-year rise.
However, on Sunday 5 October, Macau was affected by Typhoon Matmo with a No. 8 typhoon signal hoisted at 2am and remaining in effect until 1pm when it was downgraded to a No. 3 signal. During this period, border crossings were suspended, preventing a large number of visitors from entering. Inbound visitors on that day totaled only 112,996, a decrease of 24.4% compared to the previous year.
The number of visitors arriving in Macau on Mid-Autumn Festival day, Monday 6 October, rebounded to a 5.6% gain at 128,846, while another 136,780 arrived on Tuesday – an increase of 82.5% year-on-year.
The average 143,000 daily visitor arrivals fell slightly short of the anticipated daily average of 150,000 visitors.
