Cebu’s NUSTAR Resort & Casino said Wednesday it had resumed hotel, dining and casino operations after temporarily suspending those functions in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit the province late Tuesday night.
The powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake, which caused some buildings and walls to collapse, killed at least 69 people according to early reports from officials although that number is sadly expected to rise in the coming days.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing.
In an advisory posted on its social media accounts on Wednesday evening, NUSTAR – Cebu’s first and only integrated resort – said it had “resumed hotel, dining and gaming operations this evening October 1, 2025 following a thorough safety check together with local authorities.”
It added that all guests, team members and partners were safe and well cared for.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the earthquake, and we stand by the Cebu community as it recovers and rebuilds,” NUSTAR stated.
The Philippines’ Department of Tourism was among the many government agencies to offer immediate support in the aftermath of the earthquake, which struck offshore around 19km to the northeast of Bogo City – located in the northern part of the island.
State-run media outlet Philippine News Agency (PNA) said that Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco and other Cabinet secretaries visited ground zero in Cebu to assess aid requirements.
“After the 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu last night, I contacted the Office of the President and the Secretaries of National Defense, Transportation, Public Works and Highways, and Health to request urgent assistance for Cebu following coordination with local officials,” Frasco said.
“I also coordinated with DOT officials, Regional Directors and airport and port authorities to check on the status of gateways and ensure the welfare of affected communities, tourists, and tourism frontliners.”
PNA explained that several roads and bridges throughout Cebu had been badly damaged as were over 100 tourist sites and hotels.
