Macau’s hotel occupancy rate surpassed the 90% threshold in July, reaching 91% for a year-on-year gain of 1.9 percentage points, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service.
Benefiting from the summer holiday peak season, all tourism metrics in Macau showed growth in July – aided by the addition of three hotel establishments compared with the same period last year which took the total number of Macau hotel establishments to 147. The number of available guest rooms also rose by 1.0% to 45,000.
The average room occupancy rate in July was 91.0%, with the occupancy rate for five-star (94.2%) and four-star (86.4%) hotels increasing by 2.3 and 2.6 percentage points respectively.
In July, the number of hotel guests rose by 4.0% year-on-year to 1,283,000. Mainland Chinese guests increased by 3.9% to 958,000, while international guests grew by 7.3% to 82,000. Among international guests, arrivals from South Korea (25,000), Thailand (6,000), the United States (5,000) and Indonesia (4,000) increased by 5.5%, 41.7%, 16.1% and 3.4% respectively.
The average occupancy rate of hotel establishments for the first seven months of this year combined has risen by 4.7 percentage points year-on-year to 89.4%. The number of guests decreased by 0.3% year-on-year to 8,486,000, while the average length of stay remained at 1.7 nights.
Regarding inbound tour groups, July saw 145,000 group visitors, representing an 18.4% year-on-year decline. Mainland Chinese tour groups decreased by 24.1% to 124,000, while international tour groups increased by 15.1% to 15,000.
The Statistics and Census Service noted that more Chinese mainland visitors travelled under the Individual Visit Scheme following the further facilitation of travel from the mainland to the Macau SAR.
