As tensions between Thailand and Cambodia continue to escalate over disputed border territories, Thailand on Monday ordered the closure of all border checkpoints with its Southeast Asian neighbor, with the only exceptions being for students, patients and essential daily trade.
The newly tightened border restrictions include a ban not only on Thai citizens but also on foreign tourists crossing the border to gamble in Cambodia’s border casinos or flying to Siem Reap for gambling purposes. Such efforts will be “closely monitored,” according to local media reports.
Thailand had earlier this month banned its citizens from crossing the border in Sa Kaeo to work in casinos, gambling dens and other entertainment venues in Poipet.
The border crackdown, which affects checkpoints in seven Thai provinces, coincided with an order from Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to focus on eliminating scam centers in Cambodia. This followed a recent United Nations report that named Cambodia as one of the world’s largest cyber-scam hubs.
“We’ve seen a significant drop in call center scam cases since enforcement began,” Paetongtarn said, as reported by The Nation.
“The United Nations has confirmed that Cambodia is one of the global centers for cybercrime. So, we must step up our preventive measures, especially in border areas with persistent issues.
Thailand, the Prime Minister added, would work with other countries as well as international organizations to help dismantle scam networks, with the goal of positioning Thailand as a leader in anti-cybercrime efforts.
“This issue is a national priority. I have instructed all agencies to set clear timelines and KPIs,” she said. “Within three months, we must see a tangible drop in complaints and damages, as well as a rise in prosecutions and asset seizures. We are determined to eliminate this threat quickly and ensure the public receives clear, accurate communication about what we are doing.”
In response to Thailand’s heightened border measures, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet promised to reciprocate—adding that he would not allow any easing of his nation’s own border restrictions until Thailand reversed its measures.
“I hereby announce that once Cambodia has closed the gates, we will not reopen selectively just because you decide to,” he said, according to The Khmer Times. “The closure is permanent unless Thailand reopens all border points simultaneously, exactly as they were prior to 7 June. Only then will Cambodia consider reopening.”
