At least three of Macau’s concessionaires have launched job fairs that include efforts to hire workers set to be displaced by the cessation of the satellite casino industry, according to advertisements posted on online job recruitment platforms.

The three concessionaires are SJM Resorts – which last week revealed it was ceasing the operations of its nine satellite casinos – as well as Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG).

SJM is hosting a jobs fair from 16 to 18 June at Zona Nova de Aterros do Porto Exterior (NAPE); Sands China on 17 and 18 June at Sands Macao and GEG on 17 and 18 June at StarWorld.

SJM said it is recruiting for positions in customer service, food and beverage, public areas and environmental hygiene, and facilities management.

Sands China is recruiting for its business development department to promote and introduce the services of Sands Rewards Club, the company’s VIP membership program. GEG mentioned in its recruitment announcement that the job fair is specifically for “sales talent”.

The Macau government announced on 9 June that the city’s 11 satellite casinos would close at the end of the year, although SJM is looking to acquire Ponte 16 and L’Arc. Nine of Macau’s satellite casinos operate under the license of SJM and one each under GEG and Melco.

The government subsequently stated that, according to its understanding, the satellite casinos employed a combined 5,600 people, of whom 4,800 were hired directly by the concessionaires and 800 by the satellite casinos themselves.

The government emphasized that concessionaires must fulfil their social responsibility and absorb the 4,800 employees assigned to them.
