Macau International Airport (MIA) recorded 1.83 million passengers in the first quarter of 2025, a 2.2% increase over the same period last year. The number of aircraft movements also grew by 1.6% to 14,000, according to information from Macau International Airport Co Ltd (CAM).
In terms of market structure, 46% of passengers travelled on flights to and from mainland China, with 18% connecting to Taiwan and 36% from Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.
However, CAM pointed out that “despite the growth in passenger numbers, rising operational costs for airlines have further constrained capacity, leading to noticeable changes in market structure and having a significant impact on the passenger and cargo operations. It is expected that the passenger and cargo volume in 2025 will not align with the forecast target at the beginning of the year.”
To meet this challenge, MIA is launching more routes for the new daylight savings season.
Air Asia will launch flights from Tawau, Malaysia to Macau in early May. Jeju Air also expects to launch flights from Jeju, South Korea to Macau in May and is planning to launch flights from Cheongju, South Korea to Macau, further facilitating travel between Northeast Asia and Macau.
Some airlines plan to resume flight services on the Taiyuan route in mainland of China in July.
