After the Macau Jockey Club (MJC) terminated its horse racing contract with the Macau SAR Government last year, it was required to safely relocate all of its horses to other locations by the end of March 2025.
According to local Macau media outlet Macao Daily News, Doumen in nearby Zhuhai has now received 177 of the horses.
The Macau Jockey Club (MJC) announced in January last year that it had terminated its contract with the government to operate horse racing in the Macau SAR. The Government gave MJC a deadline of about one year within which it had to transfer its 289 horses to other places and return the land upon which the racecourse sits to the government.
MJC had since been silent on the fate of its horse before Macao Daily News reported Wednesday that the Customs and Excise Department of Doumen District has confirmed the receipt of 177 horses. The horses have been received from Jinping Horses Company Limited in five batches between April 2024 and now, it explained.
According to information provided by Jinping Horses Company Limited, the company has been operating a horse import and quarantine business on the mainland for the past 24 years and is the only isolation and quarantine base for the MJC’s retired horses to be transported to the mainland.
It is not yet clear where the other 121 horses are currently located, with IAG having made subsequent inquiries to MJC.
