The Macau SAR Government will organize three large-scale events during this year’s Lunar New Year, with the six concessionaires in Macau to contribute a combined MOP$18 million (US$2.24 million) in funding.
The events are the Parade for Celebration of Chinese New Year, the Chinese New Year Activities and the Chinese New Year Fireworks Displays, which have an overall budget of approximately MOP$34.8 million (US$4.34 million). This means the concessionaires will be responsible for 51.7% of the expenditure, amounting to MOP$18 million.
The highlight of the event is the parade, which will run from 31 January to 16 February. The parade will be held on the third day of Lunar New Year (31 January) and the 11th day of the first month of Chinese New Year (8 February) in the Central and Northern Districts respectively.
As in previous years, six of Macau’s concessionaires will be represented by their own parade floats. There will be a total of 17 vehicles in the parade, and 35 performing teams with a total of 1,300 performers will follow the parade.
As for the fireworks displays, the Government plans to arrange three 15-minute fireworks displays on the evenings of 31 January, 4 February and 12 February at the waterfront opposite to Macau Tower, with a view to bringing festive greetings to residents and tourists.
In regard to Chinese New Year Activities, the government plans to hold a golden dragon parade and flash mob performances at 16 locations in Macau on 29 and 30 January in the hope of attracting tourists to the community and boosting the economic vitality of the community.
