MGM China revealed fresh details of its new Macau resident show, Macau 2049, at a special press viewing on Wednesday ahead of the show’s official opening this Sunday 15 December.

Created by renowned Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, Macau 2049 is divided into eight chapters and runs for 80 minutes. The eight chapters are “Drumming. Shadows”, “Khoomei.Etherea”, “Miao Songs. Transcendent”, “The Crossroads Inn. Masks”, “Yangge. Robots”, “Yi Sound. Ocean”, “Lion Dance. Radiance” and “Storytelling. Origin” – each combining Chinese intangible cultural heritage items with new technology to present multiculturalism in an innovative way.

This is also the first theater-in-residence in the Greater Bay Area to be directed by Zhang. In his introduction, the filmmaker said, “Macau 2049 brings the two ends of time and space together at this moment, the East and the West together, here.

“I hope that this time in Macau will create an unparalleled performance for everyone with experiences unlike any other.”

Pansy Ho, Chairman and Executive Director of MGM China, said, “Macau 2049 takes the narrative of Chinese culture to extraordinary heights. We hope that every audience member who walks into the theater will find deep resonance with our time-honored culture and its fusion with future visions.:

From 15 December, Macau 2049 will run five days per week from 7pm to 8:20pm, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Macau 2049 forms part of MGM’s commitment under its 10-year gaming concession to invest MOP$16.7 billion (US$2.1 billion) into Macau, of which MOP$15 billion (US$1.9 billion) or around 90% is planned to be in non-gaming initiatives.

It will become one of only a handful of residency shows in Macau, with Melco Resorts Entertainment due to bring back its hugely successful The House of Dancing Water show in 2025.
