MGM China’s new residency show, Macau 2049, will make its debut at MGM Theater on 15 December 2024, the company has announced. Tickets go on sale from 2 November.
First announced in April under the moniker MGM 2049, the rebranded Macau 2049 is directed by world-renowned Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou and described as a “grand tribute” to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland. According to MGM, the show employs advanced technologies to artistically reimagine Chinese intangible heritage, therefore weaving a harmonious symphony of future technologies and cultural arts within Macau. It aims to offer international visitors a “new perspective on the profound richness and modern expression of Chinese culture,” the company explained.
MGM also noted that Macau 2049 “reflects the aspiration” of the company’s Chairperson and Executive Director, Pansy Ho to further foster the integrated development of cultural industries within the region.
“The show brings together a wealth of performing arts talent in Macau, creating a self-sustaining cultural platform that nurtures future performing professionals, and taps into its artistic vitality to constantly fuel the development of Macau’s cultural tourism and its position as a ‘City of Performing Arts’,” MGM China said.
Macau 2049 forms part of MGM’s commitment under its 10-year gaming concession to invest MOP$16.7 billion (US$2.1 billion) into Macau, of which MOP$15 billion (US$1.9 billion) or around 90% is planned to be in non-gaming initiatives.
It will become one of only a handful of residency shows in Macau, with Melco Resorts Entertainment due to bring back its hugely successful The House of Dancing Water show in 2025.
