The Macau International Airport expansion and reclamation project, which will increase the facility’s annual passenger capacity to 15 million, will commence within this year, the Civil Aviation Authority of Macau (AACM) has revealed.
The Macau Airport Expansion and Reclamation Project was first proposed by the SAR Government in July 2016 but wasn’t approved by China’s Central Government until October 2022.
Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) subsequently commenced pre-reclamation flood protection and environmental periodic monitoring work between August 2023 and June 2024.
The reclamation area for the project amounts to 129.6 hectares and upon completion, apron capacity will be expanded to include additional aircraft parking spaces and an express off-loading ramp. It is estimated that the annual passenger capacity will reach 15 million passengers, representing an increase of more than 50% over current levels.
According to information from CAM, the reclamation work will be carried out in phases and as necessary. Based on the current progress, the entire reclamation project is expected to be completed by 2030.
AACM pointed out that “the current economic and tourism recovery should provide favourable support for the expansion plan, but the Macau SAR Government and CAM will continue to monitor changes in the market so as to make flexible adjustments to their strategies.
“Local airlines are also making preparations to step up their efforts in international flights by developing more direct services and increasing frequencies in an orderly manner, so as to boost the growth of passenger traffic.”
