Macau concessionaire MGM China will host its first major poker tournament series in September, with a short four-event schedule highlighted by MGM’s Millionaire Maker Poker Tournament featuring a guaranteed HK$1 million (US$128,000) first prize.
According to information gathered by Inside Asian Gaming, the 2024 MGM Poker Tournament Series will run for 13 days from 3 to 15 September at MGM Cotai, boasting four events plus a number of satellite opportunities.
The series will kick off two satellites to MGM’s Millionaire Maker Poker Tournament on Tuesday 3 September, with single table satellites running every day to and including 12 September.
The series proper will begin on Wednesday 4 September with a HK$5,000 (US$640) Mystery Bounty Event, while other tournaments will include a HK$6,800 (US$870) Golden Lion Bracelet Event and a HK$88,000 (US$11,265) High Roller.
The main event, MGM’s Millionaire Maker Poker Tournament, features a HK$8,880 (US$1,136) buy-in with five Day 1 flights.
The tournament series represents yet another effort by Macau’s concessionaires to elevate poker in Macau, with Sands China having recently held a small series at The Venetian Macao – Macau’s first tournament series in over six years.
However, the World Poker Tour was forced to cancel a planned main tour stop at Wynn Palace in June. Although the WPT did not provide a reason for the cancellation at the time, IAG understands concessionaires have been told they should not work with international operators on poker events, with any such tournament series to be self-run.
