Estimated visitor receipts from tourists into the Philippines reached Php282.1 billion (US$4.84 billion) in the first six months of 2024, up 32.8% compared to the same period last year, according to information from the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said the significant increase is “testament to the relentless efforts of the Marcos administration in revitalizing” the tourism sector.
“This 32.8% rise from last year’s figures not only showcases the growing appeal of the Philippines as a premier travel destination but also underscores the tangible benefits that tourism brings to our economy and our people.
“The income generated through tourism directly translates to more opportunities and improved livelihoods for Filipinos, reinforcing the critical role this industry plays in our nation’s progress.”
According to the DOT, the Philippines has welcomed 3,173,694 inbound tourists this year as of 10 July, of which 2,937,293 or 92.6% have been foreigners.
South Korea remains the nation’s top visitor source market with 824,798 visitors representing 26.0% of the total.
This was followed by the United States with 522,667 or 16.5%, China with 199,939 or 6.3%, Japan with 188,805 or 6.0% and Australia with 137,391 or 4.3%.
“In the second half of the year, we anticipate these numbers to increase, not only the revenue generated but most importantly, the number of Filipinos employed in tourism-related industries,” Frasco said.
“Many projects aimed at improving the country’s connectivity and enhancing our visitors’ convenience are also in the pipeline to sustain the good work we have started.”
