Korean Air has launched a new route between Seoul and Macau, with the first flight touching down at Macau International Airport at midnight on 1 July.

The new route is seen as another important step towards growing international tourism into Macau, with the Macao Government Tourism Office having launched a promotional campaign in partnership with the airline, including special offers on air tickets and bringing a delegation of 17 Korean travel media representatives to experience Macau.

According to official figures, South Korea was Macau’s top international visitor market between January and May of this year and fourth overall behind mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. It added that this new Korean Air route takes the overall number of direct flights between Macau and Seoul to 35 per week, as well as three weekly flights between Macau and Busan.

Another route connecting Macau and Lisbon, Portugal with a stopover in Seoul will launch in September.

“Korea is an international visitor market that holds great potential of new growth,” the MGTO said. “Korean Air’s new flight service between Seoul and Macau is expected to elevate the city’s attraction for high-end Korean travelers and lead to a growing number of visitor arrivals from Korea, reinforcing Macau’s status as a world centre of tourism and leisure.

“Committed to the ‘1+4’ development strategy for adequate diversification, MGTO will continue to roll out dynamic marketing initiatives to energize Koreans’ intent to visit Macau and tap into international visitor markets.”
