Australia’s Star Entertainment Group has announced former Crown Resorts chief Steve McCann as its new CEO and Managing Director, part of its latest efforts to save its casino license for The Star Sydney.

McCann, who spent a year guiding Crown’s remediation efforts before the company was acquired by The Blackstone Group in 2022, represents the second key hire to have previously worked with Star’s long-term rival following the recent appointment of Jeannie Mok as Group COO. Crown, now under the leadership of Ciarán Carruthers, was recently deemed suitable to resume control of its Melbourne and Sydney casinos.

McCann will join Star from 8 July 2024 pending receipt of all regulatory approvals.

“Following a comprehensive search process, the Board is very pleased to have secured a CEO of Steve’s caliber, experience and respect in the market,” said Star Chairman Anne Ward.

“Given his time with Crown and previous long standing leadership at LendLease, he has the right credentials to lead The Star’s remediation program. His track record reflects his capability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and lead meaningful transformational change and cultural renewal.

“This experience will be invaluable as we work towards rebuilding trust and expediting the sustainable transformation of The Star.”

McCann added, “I look forward to joining The Star at this crucial time. I recognize that there are many complex issues and challenges for the company to address. I am committed to working with the Board and the various stakeholders to help drive change, restore confidence and achieve a sustainable resolution.”

McCann previously spent over a decade as Group CEO of construction giant LendLease.
