Macau’s average hotel room occupancy rate rose by 4.9 percentage points year-on-year to 83.6% in May, with the number of guests increasing by 8.4% to 1.196 million. The occupancy rate was also 3.3 % higher than the same period in 2019.
According to information from the Census and Statistics Bureau (DSEC), a total of 143 hotels in Macau offered accommodation services in May, an increase of 13 hotels on a year-on-year basis, while the number of rooms available increased by 9.3% to 47,000 rooms.
The average occupancy rate of 83.6 % included an occupancy rate of 85.3% in 5-star hotels, up by 6.4 percentage points year-on-year. 4-star hotels recording an occupancy rate of 79.7 %, up by 2.6 percentage points, although 3-star hotels saw a very slight decline to 80.8%.
In terms of hotel guests, there were 1,196,000 guests in May, up 3.3 % compared with the same month in 2019. Mainland China accounted for the majority of stays, with 870,000 guests representing a 9.7% year-on-year increase, while Hong Kong’s guests dropped by 17.4% to 164,000. International hotel guests rose by 66.1% year-on-year to 88,000.
The average length of stay remained unchanged at 1.6 nights, representing an increase of 0.2 nights from May 2019.
In the first five months of 2024, the average room occupancy rate of hotel rose by 7.7% year-on-year to 84.3%, while the number of guests increased by 25% to 6.14 million. The average length of stay maintained at 1.7 nights.
DSEC also revealed that the number of inbound tour group visitors in May this year was 242,000, representing a year-on-year increase of 190%. Mainland China tour group visitors increased by 170% year-on-year to 219,000, while international tour group visitors increased by 520% to 18,000, including 7,000 visitors from Korea, up 620%.
