Genting Malaysia said there were no reported injuries after a large fire broke out at its Genting Highlands theme park on Friday afternoon.

The blaze at the SkyAvenue shopping mall began at around 4:30pm with flames quickly engulfing the building and thick black smoke pouring into the air.

In the first of a series of announcements, Genting Malaysia said no other areas of Resorts World Genting had been impacted.

“Evacuation was carried out immediately to ensure members of the public are out of harm’s way,” the company posted on its website. “Our fire units responded promptly to extinguish the fire.

“We continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the situation progresses.”

A few hours later Genting Malaysia provided a further update, posting, “We would like to inform you that the fire at SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting, was extinguished at approximately 7.15pm on 14 June 2024. All visitors were safely evacuated and [Fire and Rescue] has given clearance to reopen SkyAvenue.

“The majority of the outlets at SkyAvenue will remain open, except for a few in the vicinity of the affected area, which will be temporarily closed.

“Our theme parks, Genting SkyWorlds and Skytropolis, along with other attractions, are unaffected and will operate as normal. Awana SkyWay will also be operational as scheduled.”

Local media reports claim up to 5,000 people were evacuated shortly after the fire was detected.
