The long wait for international poker to return to Macau looks set to last at least a little longer after the World Poker Tour announced overnight that WPT Macau, previously scheduled to take place at Cotai’s Wynn Palace from 18 to 24 June, would not go ahead.
In a statement, the WPT said that, along with its partners Wynn Macau Ltd and Allied Gaming and Entertainment, they “regret any inconvenience or disappointment for players from around the world who were planning to travel to Macau and play in the event.”
It added, “WPT remains committed to working with Wynn Macau and AGAE in the future to bring world class poker tournaments back to the region.”
As previously reported by IAG, WPT Macau – first announced in March – was to have become the WPT’s first ever Macau event as well as the first international poker series held in Macau since the closure of the PokerStars LIVE room at City of Dreams in April 2018.
It remains unclear why WPT Macau has been cancelled less than a month out.
The WPT, which has already hosted highly successful events in Cambodia, Korea and Australia in 2024, is also one of four companies – the others being the Asian Poker Tour, Top Joy Poker Tour and U Series of Poker – to have cancelled events in Vietnam this year, allegedly due to regulatory concerns.
It is not believed the cancellation of WPT Macau is in any way related to happenings in Vietnam.
