Macau welcomed around 121,750 visitor arrivals on the first day of the May Day Golden Week according to preliminary statistics from the Macau Public Security Police (PSP), below the estimated daily rate of 130,000 arrivals.
This year’s May Golden Week in mainland China runs for five days (1 to 5 May) with the Macao Government Tourism Office having earlier predicted 130,000 visitors each day. However, the weather in Macau has been poor in recent weeks with hailstorms occurring again on Tuesday night, affecting the flow of tourists.
According to the PSP, a total of 229,618 visitors entered and exited Macau on Wednesday, of which 121,750 were inbound visitors and 107,868 were outbound. They mainly traveled through the two control points of Gongbei and Hengqin.
Although the number of arrivals on the first day of the holiday was slightly lower than expected, it was still around 12% higher than the 109,000 arrivals on the first day of last year’s May Day Golden Week.
It is likely the number of arrivals will increase significantly over the weekend.
