Macau’s hotel occupancy rate hit 84.8% in 1Q24, led by five-star hotels

Macau’s hotel occupancy rate grew by 9.9 percentage points to reach 84.8% in the three months to 31 March 2024, with the occupancy rate of five-star hotels at 87.1% according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The quarterly tally included 3,779,000 hotel guests, up 39.7% year-on-year and 8.4% higher than the same quarter in 2019 – aided by the addition of 15 new hotel establishments to 141.

Guests from mainland China totaled 2,815,000 in Q1, up 40.1% year-on-year, while Hong Kong visitation grew by 0.8% to 460,000 and from Taiwan by 181% to 89,000. Visitors from South Korea jumped by 789% to 80,000.

The average length of stay of guests held stable year-on-year at 1.7 nights, which represented an increase of 0.2 night compared to the first quarter of 2019.

The 1Q24 hotel occupancy included an occupancy rate of 83.5% in March, a year-on-year increase of 6.4 percentage points year-on-year, while the number of guests grew by 26.3% year-on-year to 1,235,000.

The DSEC also revealed that the number of visitors arriving on package tours rocketed by 330% year-on-year to 482,000 in 1Q24, including 208,000 in March.
