Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture has revealed that a site in Taipa is being considered as the future home of a 50,000-seat concert venue, potentially located alongside an existing integrated resort.
At a question-and-answer session in the Legislative Assembly last week, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said he planned to find a site in Taipa for the 50,000-strong venue, adding he was “confident the site will be found within this year.”
Speaking with media on Tuesday, Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ao Ieong U, revealed “the government would like the venue to be in Taipa … the government has some options for venues and is now trying to see if these venues are suitable.”
Pressed for detail, she added, “It’s mainly on land around the Macau East Asian Games Dome and the integrated resorts. It is hoped that concerts can be held on that land in the first quarter of next year.”
According to the Cartography and Cadastre Bureau’s website, the Macau East Asian Games Dome and surrounding integrated resort are located in the Cotai reclamation area where there are a number of unused sites, including a large site next to Le Jardin and a vacant site next to Lisboeta.
The Macau government has made no secret of its desire to develop its concert industry, but due to a lack of large-scale concert venues such development has been slower than preferred.
Last year, the government and concessionaires co-operated to hold a concert for nearly 20,000 people on the reclaimed land at Macau Tower. Since then, the area has been designated as a temporary site for future performances, albeit with capacity capped at 20,000.
