Macau’s visitor arrivals totalled 2,861,609 in January, representing a 104.7% year-on-year increase and recovering to 83.5% of 2019 levels.
The figure was, however, down 2.8% month-on-month according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
Compared with January 2023, same-day visitors grew by 155% to 1,480,098 and overnight visitors by 69.3% to 1,381,511, although the average length of stay of visitors shortened by 0.4 days year-on-year to 1.2 days.
Of the total 2,861,609 visitor arrivals in January, 2,056,133 were from mainland China – up 107.3% year-on-year – with those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (1,116,184) rising by 57.8%.
Arrivals from Hong Kong (546,277) and Taiwan (59,921) grew by 53.0% and 217.6% year-on-year respectively.
International visitors totalled 199,278 in January, returning to 66.4% of January 2019 levels. In terms of Southeast Asian markets, the number of visitors from the Philippines (34,102) exceeded January 2019 levels, while the number visitors from Indonesia returned to 86.9% of pre-COVID levels as 13,961, from Thailand to 93.1% at 13,608 and from Malaysia to 66.2% at 10,997.
With respect to the Northeast Asian markets, the numbers of visitors from South Korea reached 50,552 at 50.8% of 2019 levels, and from Japan 10,646 at 34.8%.
Visitors from the USA rebounded to 66.2% of the level in January 2019 at 10,922 arrivals.
