The number of visitor arrivals to Macau jumped to 163,427 on Sunday’s second day of the Chinese New Year holiday period, considerably higher than Saturday’s 121,356 arrivals, according to information from the Public Security Police Force.
This takes the daily average for the first two days of the eight-day holiday to 142,391 – up 121% over the corresponding period last year – and with the prospect of even better days ahead.
As reported by Inside Asian Gaming, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) expects days three and four of CNY to be the busiest based on historical data.
Of the total 284,27 visitor arrivals recorded so far, 200,976 have been from mainland China, with the daily average of 100,488 representing a 167% improvement over the first two days of the 2023 CNY holiday.
Another 61,582 have come from Hong Kong at an average of 30,791, up 30.8% year-on-year.
By mode of arrival, the total two-day tally includes 97,376 via the Border Gate, 74,530 via the HZMB checkpoint and 41,592 via the Hengqin Port. Just over 40,000 have arrived by ferry and just over 20,000 by air.
The MGTO said last week it expects around 960,000 arrivals during Golden Week at an average of 120,000 per day.
There were only seven days of holidays during CNY in 2023, with the total number of visitors reaching 451,000 or 64,429 per day. By comparison, in 2019, the seven-day holiday drew 1,213,487 visitors at an average of 173,355 per day.
