Singapore’s Changi Airport handled a total of 58.9 million passenger movement in 2023, an increase of 83% compared with the prior year period and bringing it back to 86% of pre-COVID levels, according to Changi Airport Group.
The improvement came largely on the back of Northeast Asia, with mainland China proving the fastest growing market, followed by Japan and South Korea. Passenger traffic from Japan tripled versus 2022 levels while South Korea contributed a 36% year-on-year increase.
Traffic from Southeast Asia also grew by 72%, with Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand among the top five passenger markets for the year.
North America, meanwhile, soared to 25% higher than pre-COVID levels, while Europe, Southwest Pacific and South Asia recovered to more than 90%.
The recovery trajectory was even stronger in December, which proved to be the busiest month of the year. Its 5.8 million passenger movements was 91% of pre-COVID levels with 22 December proving the busiest single day of the year with 203,000 movements.
“2023 was an invigorating year, as we witnessed the resounding resumption of travel across the world, as well as the full reopening of Changi airport’s Terminal 2,” said CAG’s EVP for air hub and cargo development, Lim Ching Kiat. “The upswing in travel was fuelled by strong outbound travel demand, as well as growing inbound travel.
“We step into 2024 hopeful of making a full recovery to Changi Airport’s pre-Covid-19 connectivity and traffic levels.”
