Visitors to Malaysia from China and India will be granted 30-day visa-free entry from 1 December under a plan announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The new visa policy, which follows the Chinese Embassy recently revealing that Malaysia visitors to China would be granted 15-day visa-free entry for the next 12 months from 1 December, is aimed at boosting Chinese visitation which has been slower than many other source tourism markets to recover.
It also happens to coincide with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, with the prime minister noting the potential of the Chinese tourist market “is huge”.
Local media is also reporting that Malaysia could add more countries to its temporary visa-free list, with a meeting between Anwar and Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin taking place today.
“I will be heading to the border of Sadao (Thailand) and Bukit Kayu Hitam with the Thai Prime Minister,” Anwar said, as reported by The Star. “We have taken this approach to ensure two-way travel is good, efficient and will encourage more two-way travel between Thailand and Malaysia.
“I will continue the discussion with him. These bilateral ties will directly benefit Malaysia and Thailand.”
To support the introduction of the new visa-free policy, Anwar said his government would upgrade transport infrastructure at airports and other tourism facilities.
