Asia’s Timor-Leste aiming to become iGaming license hub, flags potential casino-resort development

The Virtual Gaming Association of Timor-Leste (VGA), a trade association representing the online gaming industry, is looking to establish Timor-Leste as the world’s newest hub for online gaming licensing and professional support services.

It has also flagged development of a luxury resort and casino in the future.

According to information sent to IAG, the VGA has been established with a view to creating a policy of best practices for the licensing and regulation of iGaming in the Southeast Asian country.

Partners involved in the implementation of this process were in Malta last week where they met with global gaming operators and received industry feedback that it said would help influence the definition of the sector’s policies in Timor-Leste and help set up the country as an iGaming friendly global licensing jurisdiction.

The aim, according to the VGA, is to develop industry-best practices for Timor-Leste’s iGaming regulation, covering player protection measures, technological requirements for operators and developing a commercial framework that makes Timor-Leste “one of the most business-friendly jurisdictions globally for the iGaming industry.”

Timor-Leste is seen as an appropriate iGaming jurisdiction due to boasting a population of which two-thirds is under the age of 30, which the VGA says opens significant opportunities for the creation of call centers and data centers, as well as for the development of a luxury resort and casino.
