The hosting of major sporting events and similar activities can become one of the main drivers of international visitors to Macau in the future, according to Wynn Macau Ltd President and Vice Chairman Linda Chen.
Chen spoke with local media on Monday following a press conference at which Wynn announced its support for the first ever International Series Macau golf event in March 2024, backed by LIV Golf.
With Wynn also preparing to host the inaugural Macau Snooker Masters at Wynn Palace in December, Chen said, “Sports+Tourism will make Macau a better tourist experience and attract more international travelers to the city.
“The number of visitors to Macau is slowly increasing and the business environment will be better because the Macau travel experience is getting better.”
Boosting Macau’s tourism appeal, particularly to international visitors, forms part of mandated requirements under concessionaires’ new 10-year gaming licenses, issued last December. For Wynn, this has already included revitalization of the old districts through Rua da Felicidade. Chen said Macau’s tourism environment is already becoming more diversified as a result of such efforts.
“From Golden Week on 1 October to the Halloween activities at the end of October, as well as the Grand Prix events in the past two weeks and the revitalization of the old districts, we can see that the activities in Macau are diversifying,” she explained.
“We are doing a lot of activities along the way and these are what the tourism industry and the government would like to see. Whether it is Wynn or other tourism products, everyone is making progress.
“We look forward to more events coming next year to further attract more international travelers to Macau.”
