Macau’s hotel occupancy rate reached 78.6% in September, up 41.1 percentage points year-on-year although well down on the 88.7% rate recorded in August. September’s visitation was heavily impacted by seasonality as well as the impact of Super Typhoon Saola and on ongoing adverse weather events.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the occupancy rate of 5-star hotels in September was 81.9%, while 2-star hotels reached 77.3%, up by 46.0 and 35.7 percentage points respectively.
The number of guests of hotel establishments in September increased by 158.2% year-on-year to 1,135,000, including 813,000 guests from mainland China, 178,000 from Hong Kong and 30,000 from Taiwan. The number of local guests fell by 41.5% to 46,000, with the average length of stay of all guests combined staying at 1.6 nights.
For the first three quarters of 2023, the average occupancy rate of hotel establishments went up by 43.1 percentage points year-on-year to 80.6%, and while number of guests soared by 160.9% year-on-year to 9,793,000.
September also saw 133,000 visitors arriving on package tours, taking the total number of package tour visitors between 1 January and 30 September to 743,000.
