The Macau government collected a total of MOP$6.44 billion (US$799 million) in gaming tax revenue in August, up 9.5% over July and representing the highest monthly tally since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The improvement reflects rapidly rising gaming revenues across Macau’s casino industry, with GGR having climbed each and every month for the first eight months of the year to hit MOP$16.66 billion (US$2.06 billion) in July and MOP$17.21 billion (US$2.12 billion) in August. The August tax figure is related to July GGR.
Gaming tax revenue for the first eight months of 2023 reached MOP$39.1 billion (US$4.85 billion), up 175% year-on-year. It also represents 76.9% of the government’s budget of MOP$50.85 billion (US$6.30 billion) for FY23.
Total revenue generated by the government through August sits at MOP$48.1 billion (US$5.97 billion), meaning gaming tax has contributed 81.3% of Macau-wide income for the period.
As reported by Inside Asian Gaming, Macau’s recovery trajectory is set to slow in September with analysts forecasting a “month to forget” due to the effects of Super Typhoon Saola.
