Macau’s hotel occupancy rate reached 89.0% in July, with five-star hotels achieving a rate of 92.1% – representing a year-on-year increase of 71.1 percentage points.
According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the number of hotel establishments providing accommodation services to the public totaled 132 in July, an increase of 17 year-on-year, with the total number of available rooms up by 37.3% to 43,000 rooms.
The average occupancy rate of rooms rose by 50.2 percentage points year-on-year to 89.0%, with the occupancy rate of 2-star hotels at 93.1% and 5-star hotels at 92.1%, representing year-on-year increases of 6.8 percentage points and 71.1 percentage points respectively.
The number of hotel guests in July was also up by 340% year-on-year to 1.28 million, with mainland China continuing to account for the largest number of guests at 946,000. There were also 200,000 guests from Hong Kong and 27,000 guests from Taiwan.
The number of local residents staying in Macau’s hotels was around 46,000, a decrease of 5.0% year-on-year. The average length of stay of residents decreased by 0.7 nights to 1.6 nights year-on-year.
For the first seven months of 2023 combined, the average occupancy rate of hotels increased by 41.8 percentage points year-on-year to 79.6%, while the number of guests increased by 150% to 7.32 million. The average length of stay decreased by 0.2 nights to 1.7 nights.
July also saw Macau welcome 110,000 visitors arrive as part of tour, while the number of Macau residents purchasing outbound travel services through travel agencies rose by 2,730% to 42,000 year-on-year. From January to July there were 474,000 tour group arrivals, and 216,000 locals using outbound travel services.
