Macau International Airport (MIA) has announced that passenger volume for the first half of 2023 exceeded 1.95 million, representing a 225% year-on-year increase in the 599,185passengers who passed through last year. However, it was still only 41% of the passenger volume during the same period in 2019.

Macau’s full-year passenger volume in 2019 was 9,611,427 with more than 77,000 flights; with the first half of that year seeing 4.72 million passengers.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, the number of flights at Macau Airport dropped significantly with passenger volumes of 1,173,231 in 2020, 1,147,015 in 2021 and 599,185 in 2022.

According to an update from MIA on Wednesday, average daily passenger volume has reached 16,000 in July.

“As the local tourism industry gradually recovers, the airport passenger volume is increasing steadily,” it said.

To meet the growing travel demand, MIA plans to gradually resume the “Express Link” service from late August with the official launch of the Macau International Airport Check-In Centre located on the ground floor at the Macau Frontier Port of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).

Passengers who travel via HZMB can take the “Express Link” bus service directly to the restricted area of MIA after completing their check-in procedures at the Centre.

“The official operation of this Centre will attract passengers to travel to different regions through MIA via HZMB, improving passenger convenience and better integrate the needs of the development of the Greater Bay Area,” MIA said.
