Macau hotel occupancy rate nears 80% in April

The average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotel rooms reached 79.8% in April, up 50.0 percentage points year-on-year and 2.8 percentage points higher than in March, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The improvement was aided by the continual return of visitors since the reopening of borders on 8 January, with the Public Security Police Force having previously revealed there were almost 2.3 million visitor arrivals in April. DSEC added that there were 8 more hotel establishments open in April than in the same month last year, taking the total to 129 and the number of available guest rooms to 43,000.

The number of guests of hotel establishments in April climbed by 199.0% year-on-year to 1,101,000, up from 972,000 in March, with 739,000 guests from mainland China, 254,000 from Hong Kong and 18,000 from Taiwan. The average length of stay of guests narrowed by 0.1 nights year-on-year to 1.6 nights.

For the first four months of 2023 combined, the average occupancy rate of Macau hotels grew by 38.2 percentage points year-on-year to 76.2%. The number of guests also soared by 118.4% to 3,806,000, although their average length of stay also decreased by 0.1 nights to 1.7 nights.

DSEC said the number of visitors arriving on package tours in April totalled 97,000, taking the total for the first four months of 2023 to 209,000.
