A total of 89 people are being investigated in Singapore for alleged involvement in illegal horse betting activities, the Singapore Police Force has revealed.
The group, comprising 85 men and four women aged between 38 and 84, are said to be involved in various roles from illegal bookmaking to acting as runners, while some are believed to be punters.
Police revealed Wednesday that they had conducted a series of enforcement operations between 10 and 20 May 2023, including officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the seven Police Land Divisions.
Raids were carried out at multiple locations and uncovered cash amounting to more than SG$64,000 (US$47,425), an array of mobile phones and horse betting paraphernalia.
“The Police do not condone any form of illegal gambling activities and will continue to take tough enforcement action against anyone who is involved in those activities,” the police said. “Members of public are advised to steer clear of all forms of illegal gambling.”
According to The Straits Times, anyone convicted of betting with an unlawful gambling service provider can be fined up to SG$10,000 (US$7,410), serve a jail term of up to six months, or both.
