As of 1 May 2023, the Macau SAR Government will no longer restrict the number of land border crossings between Macau and Zhuhai to a single round-trip per day.

The daily round-trip restriction has been in place since 9 August 2022 and has been extended four times since but won’t be extended again when the current period expires on 30 April.

This means travel measures between Macau and mainland China will be eased even further in time for the “May Day” Golden Week holiday period, with the director of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, expecting a daily average of 70,000 visitors.

The change was first outlined via a notice from the Zhuhai Municipal Bureau of Commerce and confirmed by the director of Macau Customs during a media interview on Tuesday morning.

Therefore, starting from 1 May, all Macau ports will no longer be subject to restrictions on customs clearance with the mainland.

Senna Fernandes said she has high expectations for the upcoming Golden Week.

“There have recently been about 60,000 visitor arrivals per day and the hotel room booking rate reached 60% last week,” she said, adding that daily visitor arrivals should reach at least 70,000 during Golden Week with hotel occupancy as high as 80% or 90%.

In an interview with IAG last week, President of the Macau Travel Industry Council, Andy Wu, said the occupancy rate of hotels during Golden Week could reach 90%.

“More than half of the hotels, especially those owned by the six concessionaires, are fully booked and the average occupancy rate is quite high,” he said.
