MACAU SLOT CO LTD was dealt somewhat of a surprise hand last year when the government granted a three-year extension to its sports betting concession but removed its long-time exclusivity clause.
Exactly what that means in the long-term remains to be seen, although with the wider Macau market still depressed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Macau Slot looks like remaining the SAR’s only operational sports betting provider for some years to come. That alone should pave the way for an upward trajectory, with its having booked a 32% increase in profit in 2021 to MOP$127 million (US$15.7 million).
Founded in the mid-1980s under Stanley Ho’s STDM gambling empire, Macau Slot was granted Macau’s only franchise to accept betting on football in 1998, adding basketball two years later. In 2002, when the Macau SAR Government was handing out concessions to casino operators, Macau Slot became the holder of Macau’s only sports betting concession – a monopoly concession it has held until now, pending the potential entry of new competitors in the future.
Like the rest of the SAR, Macau Slot is suffering due to the covid zero policy of the mainland, but expect the company to bounce back to former glories when visitors return.
