The number of visitors entering Macau reached 557,842 in September, representing a 68.3% month-on-month improvement although 11.3% lower than the same time last year.
The sequential improvement continued Macau’s recovery, albeit subdued, from July’s record low of just 9,759 visitors amidst a mid-year outbreak of COVID-19.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), September’s numbers included 280,270 overnight visitors (280,270), down by 0.3% year-on-year, and 277,572 same-day visitors, down 20.3%. The average length of stay of visitors increased by 0.2 days year-on-year to 1.8 days.
The majority of visitation into Macau came from mainland China, down 13.8% year-on-year to 502,668, of which 188,148 travelled under the Individual Visit Scheme. Visitors from the nine cities in the Pearl River Delta in the Greater Bay Area totalled 295,663, of which 39.6% came from Zhuhai. There were also 46,179 visitors from Hong Kong and 6,615 from Taiwan.
For the first nine months of 2022 combined, the number of visitor arrivals fell by 24.2% year-on-year to 4,364,105. Same-day visitors (2,619,343) and overnight visitors (1,744,762) fell by 8.2% and 39.9% respectively, the DSEC said, with the average length of stay of visitors decreasing by 0.2 days year-on-year to 1.4 days.
