Macau’s hotel occupancy rate fell by 25.6 percentage points year-on-year to 38.1% in July, impacted by border restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The rate was also 1.0 percentage points lower than in June.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), five-star hotels suffered a significant hit with average occupancy falling by 42.2 percentage points to 21.4%.
There were only 309,000 hotel guests in July, down 55.6% year-on-year, of 238,000 were mainland guests and 51,000 local guests. The average length of stay increased by 0.4 nights to 2.1 nights.
The decline in hotel occupancy follows Macau’s first major outbreak of COVID-19, which began on 18 June and lasted for 44 days. The city was locked down for 12 days from 12 to 23 July, with all industrial and commercial establishments closed. Hotels remained open, however restrictions on entry and exit from Macau resulted in a significant drop in arrivals and a decrease in hotel occupancy.
In July 2019, pre-COVID, Macau’s the hotel occupancy rate was 93.2% sith and the occupancy rate of five-star hotels at 94%.
